Russian lawmakers are looking at the possibility of seizing the property of citizens who fled the country following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict and are badmouthing their nation from abroad, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin has said.
Speaking during a parliament session on Tuesday, Volodin refuted criticism that the measure was “excessive,” insisting that it would only be used against “scoundrels who broke the law, who did harm.”
The legislation would target people who fled abroad and tarnish Russia, while continuing to make money in the country, the speaker explained. “They have real estate here, bank accounts, businesses, but at the same time they’re throwing mud at the country, wiping their feet with it,” he said.
China has rebuked the US for its brinkmanship over the nation's “catastrophic debt problem” as Washington approaches a statutory debt ceiling this week that could see the country defaulting on its obligations.
The criticism came from the Chinese embassy in Zambia’s capital Lusaka, following a reproach from US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen over alleged mishandling by Beijing of a debt problem in the southern African country.
On Monday, during a visit to Zambia, Yellen said that it was critically important to restructure the country’s debt. She blamed China, the key creditor of the African state, for being an obstacle to resolving the problem.
In response, the Chinese Embassy in Zambia said on Tuesday that “the biggest contribution that the US can make to the debt issues outside the country is to act on responsible monetary policies, cope with its own debt problem, and stop sabotaging other sovereign countries’ active efforts to solve their debt issues.”
US federal agents arrested 38 suspected terrorists at the southern border in the final three months of 2022 as the flow of illegal aliens into the country surged to an all-time high. The suspects were named on the terror watchlist in October-December, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data.
In the government’s latest fiscal year, which ended on September 30, 98 suspected terrorists were caught while trying to cross the southern US border, up more than sixfold from the preceding 12 months.
Since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, about 150 people in the US terrorist screening database have been apprehended at the border. By comparison, there were 14 such arrests during former president Donald Trump’s four years in office – fewer than the 17 caught last month alone.
Suspected terrorists still make up a tiny percentage of the overall flow of illegal alien traffic at the southern border, but the rate has jumped nearly ninefold since Biden took office.
The US and Israeli militaries began their largest-ever joint exercise on Monday, seeking to hone seamless coordination of their forces and prove a point to Iran about their readiness to fight a conflict in the Middle East even as Washington juggles rising tensions with Russia and China.
“I do think that this scale of the exercise is relevant to a whole range of scenarios, and Iran may draw certain inferences from that,” a senior US defense official told reporters. “It would not surprise me if Iran, you know, sees the scale and the nature of these activities and understands what the two of us are capable of doing.”
Dubbed Juniper Oak, the exercise will involve over 140 aircraft, including nuclear-capable bombers and F-35 fighter jets, as well as 12 warships and about 7,500 troops, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM). It’s designed to improve the “interoperability” of both forces.
One ethnic Serb has been hospitalized with a chest wound after ethnic Albanian special police in northern Kosovo opened fire on a civilian vehicle on Monday morning, an official in Belgrade has said, protesting the latest attack in the Western-backed breakaway province.
The incident happened around 11:30 local time at a checkpoint between Kosovska Mitrovica and Leposavic, according to the Serbian government’s commissioner for Kosovo, Petar Petkovic. He blamed the ethnic Albanian prime minister, Albin Kurti, for the shooting.
Disrupting Earth’s chemical cycles brings trouble. But planet-warmingcarbon dioxide isn’t the only element whose cycle we’ve turned wonky—we’ve got a phosphorus problem too. And it’s a big one, because we depend on this element to grow the world’s crops. “I don't know if it would be possible to have a full world without any mineral phosphorus fertilizer,” says Joséphine Demay, a PhD student at INRAE, France’s National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment.
Since the 1800s, agriculturalists have known that elemental phosphorus is a crucial fertilizer. Nations quickly began mining caches of “phosphate rock,” minerals rich in the element. By the middle of the 20th century, companies had industrialized chemical processes to turn it into a form suitable for supercharging crops, hardening them against disease, and making them able to support more people and livestock. That approach worked remarkably well: The post-World War II “Green Revolution” fed countless people thanks to fertilizers and pesticides. But sometimes there’s too much of a good thing.
Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday if President Joe Biden is involved in a “cover-up” in connection with the classified documents discovered at his private residence.
Moscow has repeatedly underscored that western hostile acts and its packages of sanctions against Iran and Russia will not prevent the two countries from bolstering mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas.
Russia and Iran continued to bolster bilateral economic collaboration in the face of western sanctions last year. Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that in 2022, trade turnover between Moscow and Tehran increased by 15% to a whopping $4.6 billion on Monday.
NASA is considering a faster way of traveling to Mars, which could take astronauts from Earth to the Red Planet in just 45 days.
According to the agency's statement, the idea behind the technology is Nuclear Thermal Propulsion or Nuclear Electric Propulsion. It is a new class of bimodal nuclear propulsion that uses a wave rotor topping cycle. NASA has stressed that this technology will revolutionize deep space exploration.
A nuclear propulsion rocket consists of an atomic reactor heating liquid hydrogen propellant. In turn, hydrogen propellant turns into ionized hydrogen gas and it is channeled through nostrils to generate thrust. According to the agency, the interesting aspect is that thanks to this propulsion system, the vessel can go to Mars and back multiple times.
MSNBC anchor Joy Reid said Monday that Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration barred a class with components of critical race theory (CRT) to “appease” people that look like the governor.
The World Economic Forum's annual meeting took place in Davos on January 16-20, 2023. International observers sat down with Sputnik to formulate the main message of the gathering in a nutshell.
"This year’s forum featured the new state of the world: divided, resentful, and grim," Gal Luft, director of the Washington-based Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, told Sputnik. "Davos has become the dressing room of the West and is more divorced than ever from the rest. It no longer represents the real concerns of most of the world’s population. Its obsession with climate change, social justice, gender and other forms of wokeness has made it a laughing stock and target of disdain for most of the world."
The World Economic Forum (WEF), an international non-governmental and lobbying organization, was founded in January 1971 by German economist Klaus Schwab. Initially the entity was called "European Management Forum"; it changed its name to the World Economic Forum in 1987.
Bringing together business executives, thought leaders, and prominent politicians, the forum sought to become a global platform to spearhead the ideas of globalization and solve pressing economic and political dilemmas. However, some Western commentators observed that the forum quickly morphed into a technocratic globalist elitist club which sought to dictate rules for the rest of the world.
The Netherlands will send 8 F-35 fighters to the border of Russia and Belarus.
At the moment, it is known that the fifth generation fighters are sent to the territory of Poland. At the same time, two fighters will be constantly in a state of full combat readiness, while other aircraft will be used to conduct patrols along the border of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.
It is known that the sending of F-35 fighters to Poland is carried out in connection with the growing tension between Russia and the West. In particular, we are talking about the deployment of large forces on the territory of Belarus near the border with Poland.
To date, a large grouping of NATO fighters has been deployed on the territory of Poland - taking into account data from open sources, currently about 20 F-35 fighters can be located on the territory of Poland - in addition to the arrival of the Dutch aviation, there may be 12 F-35 fighters of the US Air Force.

An election integrity group said 10.9 million out of a total 22.1 million ballots that had been mailed out to registered voters during the 2022 midterm elections went “unaccounted for,” according to a Jan. 18 report.
“Mail voting practices have an insurmountable information gap,” the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) said on Monday. “The public cannot know how many ballots were disregarded, delivered to wrong mailboxes, or even withheld from the proper recipient by someone at the same address.”
The watchdog released the two-page report (pdf) detailing what it called “the failures” of California’s first mass-mail balloting election following the passage of Assembly Bill 37 (AB 37), which requires that ballots automatically be mailed to all active registered voters statewide. The bill, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September 2021, makes vote-by-mail ballots, a practice implemented in the 2020 general election in conjunction with the COVID-19 pandemic, permanent for all elections.
California has more registered voters than any other state. Yet its vote-by-mail policies—among the nation’s most expansive—have resulted in large numbers of ballots “disappearing at poll closing time,” PILF’s data show.
“After accounting for polling place votes and rejected ballots in November 2022, there were more than 10 million ballots left outstanding, meaning election officials do not know what happened to them,” reads the Wednesday report.
“It is fair to assume that the bulk of these were ignored or ultimately thrown out by the intended recipients. But, under mass-mail elections, we can only assume what happened,” it continued.
Earth’s inner core has recently stopped spinning, and may now be reversing the direction of its rotation, according to a surprising new study that probed the deepest reaches of our planet with seismic waves from earthquakes.
The mind-boggling results suggest that Earth’s center pauses and reverses direction on a periodic cycle lasting about 60 to 70 years, a discovery that might solve longstanding mysteries about climate and geological phenomena that occur on a similar timeframe, and that affect life on our planet.
Of course, it must be noted this is more or less the plot of the 2003 disaster film The Core, but there’s no need to worry about averting an impending apocalypse by nuking the center of Earth. While the core’s rotation influences Earth’s surface environment, scientists think this periodic spin switch is a normal part of its behavior that does not pose risks for life on our planet.
